As the prince grows older, he is blessed with numerous gifts from the island's inhabitants, including the ability to speak to animals and control the winds. The prince befriends a wise swan who aids him in his journey back to his father's kingdom.

Meanwhile, back in the kingdom, Tsar Saltan is grief-stricken, believing his wife and son to be dead. He is pressured by his sisters-in-law to remarry and produce an heir to the throne. However, Tsar Saltan remains faithful to his lost wife and child.
